Beyond their role in bone health, vitamin D also contributes to normal muscle function, supporting everyday movement and physical activity. Research has shown that vitamin D supplementation can have a small positive effect on muscle strength, particularly in people with low vitamin D status [1]. Research on vitamin K2 has also shown positive effects on markers of bone quality and strength [2].
Vitamin D deficiency
Vitamin D status can vary considerably between populations and regions, with factors such as geography, lifestyle and season all playing a role [3,4]. In one European analysis, 40.4% of individuals had vitamin D levels below 50 nmol/L, a commonly used reference value for vitamin D status [3]. Global data also show substantial variation in vitamin D levels, with many studies reporting average values below this threshold [4]. Together, these findings show that vitamin D levels can vary widely across populations and highlight the role of dietary sources of vitamin D as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Role of vitamin D
Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, and to the maintenance of normal bones [5]. It also contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function [6] and to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin D receptors are found in various tissues throughout the body, reflecting the vitamin’s involvement in a range of physiological processes [5]. As a fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin D therefore plays an important nutritional role in supporting these normal functions as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Role of vitamin K
Vitamin K exists in different forms, with vitamin K2 (menaquinones) showing distinct distribution and roles in the body compared to vitamin K1. Evidence indicates that vitamin K2 contributes to the normal function of vitamin K–dependent proteins, which are involved in processes such as bone health and calcium handling. At the same time, dietary intake and status of vitamin K2 can vary depending on dietary patterns and food sources, with some populations having relatively low intake levels [7,8]. Together, this highlights the importance of including reliable sources of vitamin K2 as part of a balanced diet.
Vitamin D + K working together
Vitamin D and vitamin K are functionally connected, as vitamin D supports the production of vitamin K dependent proteins involved in calcium metabolism [9]. The two vitamins also have complementary roles in calcium-related processes: vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium, while vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones [10].
In simple terms, vitamin D helps make calcium available to the body, while vitamin K supports the proteins involved in using that calcium in bone. This complementary relationship is why we combine the two vitamins in one formula. We specifically use vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), which has been shown to raise blood vitamin D levels more effectively than vitamin D2, and vitamin K2 as MK-7, a well-absorbed form that remains in circulation for longer than other forms of vitamin K [2,11].
Why do we use extra virgin olive oil?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means that dietary fat plays a role in its absorption. That’s why we use extra virgin olive oil as a carrier. Naturally rich in monounsaturated fats, it provides a suitable lipid-based matrix for vitamin D3. In digestion models, vitamin D3 delivered with olive oil has shown favourable bioaccessibility, supporting its use as a practical carrier within the formulation [12,13,14]
